Brad Borges has been with Mid Atlantic Crane – a Raleigh-based provider of overhead cranes and material handling equipment – for almost 10 years. As CTO and VP, Brad worked with Close HR during one of the company’s hardest times.
“After the CTO left, we had a large number of people resign,” he said. “It was me and the owner scrambling to keep things together, stop people from leaving, and keep the morale up.”
One of the employees who left was the HR manager, so Brad was tasked with overseeing HR by the owner. The owner found Close HR and pulled them in.
“Close HR was a tremendous help, since HR is something that the owner and I had no experience in,” said Brad. “He was heavily involved in sales, and I was in manufacturing. We had to get people hired and onboarded quickly. We had to do company benefits.”
Over 12 months, Close HR rewrote Mid Atlantic Crane’s manual and policies, coached them on how to deal with different situations and manage people well, sat in on interviews, and transitioned out employees when needed. Brad saw a big difference in the company’s morale.
“At the core, they guided us through this difficult spot that could have sunk us as a company,” said Brad. “They plugged the holes.”
One story that stood out to Brad was when Mid Atlantic Crane hired an NCSU student intern to help with HR after their new hire didn’t work out. The intern was outstanding, and Mid Atlantic Crane hired her full-time after graduation. Along the way, Close HR took the intern under their wing, providing mentorship, coaching, and career advice.
Brad also noted how Close HR really cares about people. He recalled how he had surgery and was absent from work for a little while. Ann and the team regularly texted him asking how he was doing and that they were praying for him.
Close HR helped Mid Atlantic Crane hire a full-time manager but still checks in, and Brad and Ann catch up on the latest sports event and ask about each other’s families. “I look forward to using them more when we start growing again,” he said.
